Wetlands are one of the world's most productive ecosystems and also the most endangered. They refuge enormous quantities of matchless plant and animal species, which in many cases, are in danger of extinction. Wetlands are essential for hydrological and ecological processes and play an essential part in the subsistence of a large number of communities. regardless of their importance, approximately one-third of the world's wetland areas have been drained during the last century.
What are wetlands?
Wetlands are lakes, swamps, ponds, torrents, rivers, marshes, shores, estuaries, and mangrove areas. They can be natural or artificial bodies, permanent or temporary, stagnant or running, fresh, brackish or salty, including shallow marine areas. Included are many habitat types, including coastal areas and even coral reefs.

The most important wetlands  
Caño Negro wetlandssee the video
This refuge extends through a 10,000 hectare refuge and is an important wintering site for migrant waterfowl, as well as a year-round habitat for resident wetland species. This is an eco vacation wonderland where one can experience so many species in one place: Cayman , Sloth, white faced and howler monkeys, tapir and other inhabitants. Visiting the habitat at Caño Negro in winter you will view a dramatic seasonal change. With the water accumulated in the rainy season, a shallow lake of some 800 hectares. is formed. As the dry season progresses from December to March, the lake dries up.

  Palo Verde wetlandssee the video  
  Palo Verde National Park is a wildlife refuge located between Tempisque and Bebedero rivers in the province of Guanacaste. In this park we can find the biggest area of preserve wetlands in Costa Rica. Scientists from all over the world come to study this rich ecosystem that combines rivers, marshland, mangroves and dry forest. see more  
  Tortuguerosee the video  
  The region surrounding Tortuguero is called the Tortuguero Plain, which is a vast area of little topographic relief, still covered by a large expanse of tropical rainforest. The park now includes over 19,000 hectares (46,900 acres) and protects 22 miles of nesting beach from the mouth of the Tortuguero River south to Parisimina. The park, and the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge to the north, comprise the largest remaining adjoining tract of lowland wet tropical forest on Costa Rica's Atlantic Coast. see more
