Irazu, At 3,432
m high, it is the highest volcano in the country, and
has a long history of eruptions and eruption cycles.
Irazu is another option for viewing an impressive live
volcano in Costa Rica.
You can see both the Caribbean and
Pacific Ocean on a clear day from this volcano. There
are three main craters here. The main one is almost
circular, 1,050 m in diameter and 250 to 300 m deep.
At its base there is a lagoon with greenish color water.
Another crater is called Diego de la Haya which is circular,
690 m in diameter and 80 m deep.
The landscape that surrounds the volcano
is like a science-fiction movie set the past eruptions
and the acid rain combined with powerful winds have
caused the land around the craters to look hostile and
gray .After visiting the volcano, we will tour the historic
city of Cartago which used to be the capital of Costa
Rica. You will see the ruins of the old Parish and the
rich interior of one of Costa Rica’s prettiest
churches, the Basilica of “Virgen de los Angeles”. |
