| San Pedro is the capital of Montes de Oca Canton in the San José Province in Costa Rica. It is home to the University of Costa Rica (UCR) as well as other institutions of higher learning. It has all the services and facilities of any major city. From San Jose, drive east on Avenida 2 past National Museum; Los Yoses starts where the road merges into Avenida Central. San Pedro is a little further ahead, past the traffic circle at the La Hispanidad water fountain. Buses leave regularly from downtown San Jose to Los Yoses and San Pedro. San Pedro is one of the most popular neighborhoods of San Jose. It attracts a number of young people because of the presence of the largest public university in the country, UCR. University of Costa Rica's sprawling green campus has more than 50 species of native and exotic trees with a lot of birds. It celebrates "University Week," the last week of April with music concerts and parades. A more youthful part of town, there are a number of good restaurants and bars surrounding the university campus as well as several affordable hotels. The bar scene here is probably the best in the city. The most famous party street is Calle La Amargura. San Pedro has one of the best malls in the city, the Mall San Pedro. It is a large towering mall with all kinds of shops, restaurants and a movie theatre. There is also a roller rink Salon de Patines Music near the mall, just east of La Hispanidad water fountain. The quiet residential district of Los Yoses has a number of foreign embassies and diplomatic enclaves in its vicinity. There are several Language Institutes in this area as well. An upper-middle-class area, it is the most upscale part of Eastern San Jose. Situated very close to downtown it takes only 5 to 10 minutes to get here by taxi or bus. The hotels in the area are also quite economical, with several small bed and breakfast and hostel options. This part of the city is a great place to stay in if you wish to avoid the noise, yet stay close to the heart of downtown. |
