Playa Flamingo with its crescent shaped mile long beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Situated on the country’s Pacific Coast, Playa Flamingo is located in Punta Salinas, northwest of Bahia Brasilito and 47 miles southwest of Liberia, Guanacaste. Located in between the beaches of Playa Potrero and Playa Brasilito, Playa Flamingo or Flamingo Beach is the only full-service marina between Acapulco and Panama on the Pacific coast of Central America.
The closest international airport is the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia, which is about an hour away. There is a paved road to Playa Flamingo. Alternatively, the smaller airport in Tamarindo receives domestic flights from around the country, and from this airport visitors are a short taxi or bus ride away from Flamingo Beach. From the capital of San Jose the bus or car ride is about six hours along the Inter-American Highway.
With its stunning white sand, clean beaches and pristine clear blue waters, Playa Flamingo is the ideal vacation spot, offering visitors some of the best deep sea fishing in the world. Marlin, tuna, swordfish and snapper can be found off the coast all year around, making this beach an extremely popular tourist destination. Every July, this beautiful beach also plays host to a fantastic international sailfish tournament sponsored by the Costa Rican Amateur Fishermen’s Club.
Besides deep sea fishing, Playa Flamingo also offers a wealth of water sports along with close proximity to the amazing Santa Rosa National Park and the Palo Verde natural reserve. Nearby, for the golfing enthusiast is also an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.
Two sunset and day cruises embark from the Marina Flamingo for snorkeling and dolphin quests. The 45-foot Papagayo and 52-foot Shannon can be booked at local tour companies.
Scuba diving is available here all year round, allowing tourists to experience the excitement of swimming with white-fin sharks white-tipped sharks, giant manta rays, hammerhead sharks and sailfish. Sailing and diving expeditions and tours can also be arranged to the close by island of Plata.
As is the case with all Beaches in the Papagayo region, Flamingo Beach is rich in natural beauty. Mangroves are abundant in the area, and Salinas Point offers a stunning view of both the Potrero and Brasilito Bays. Not far south of Flamingo Beach is the Marino Las Baulas National Park (Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas). Established in 1990, this refuge encompasses roughly 450 hectares of coastline and mangrove swamp, and it is one of the world's most significant nesting sites for the endangered Leatherback Turtle. These giant, majestic creatures come ashore to nest between November and April. There is an informative turtle museum on site and night-tours are offered during nesting season. The park is also a great place to spot marine birds, including the White Ibis, the Blue-winged Teal, and the Muscovy Duck. Additionally it is home to monkeys, Coatis, and even crocodiles.
