The Río Celeste is one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular rivers. This river’s light blue color – the result of sulphur and calcium carbonate mixing – has attracted the attention of locals and foreigners alike, earning it a unique place in Costa Rica’s already diverse set of natural wonders.

The river, tumbles and crashes through an amazing rainforest. A trip here involves a moderately challenging, one-hour hike through the park’s secondary forest – an effort that is well worth the trip. Two rivers merge into one at Borbollones, a confluence where the minerals from the river and the Tenorio Volcano meet and subsequently create the infamous blue color.

In addition to the colorful attraction of the water, the river also has several thermal hot springs and a large waterfall. Dips into the pool at the base of the fall are popular, as are soaks in the hot springs; still, one needs to be wary of the hot water and boiling mud pots, and use caution while exploring the banks of the river.

The lagoon is a sky-blue oasis of peace and is perhaps where you can best experience the river’s visual and olfactory essence. As the water pools here, the blue tint seems all the more brilliant, solid and deep. Because the reaction of this water on humans is still unknown, bathing is prohibited. However, tactile contact with the water is not necessary. The impacting beauty and calm are enough.

The waterfall is an amazing cascade that tumbles into a sky-blue pool, surrounded by rainforest and giant river boulders. Swimming is discouraged, especially swimming under the waterfall. Although the waterfall is one of the first sights along the walk, experts recommend visiting it last because the hike to it is very steep, and if you visit it first you might find that you have little energy left for the rest of the hike.

You’ll get a complete sensory experience at the bubblers. These are boiling springs that emit intense odors of volcanic minerals. At the vantage point, you’ll find a deck built in a clearing. This is a great place to rest and the view showcases Tenorio Volcano in all its splendor.

The Ranger Station at the park is open for visitor attention from 8am to 4pm. It has restrooms, drinking water and first aid available.

The Tenorio Volcano area along with the Río Celeste offers visitors some of the most unique experiences. One can take an adventurous hike up to the volcano, or just enjoy the peaceful nature that surrounds them in the cloud forest. Everyone will walk away astonished by the beauty of this region!
